The Village is hosting the First Annual Holiday Festival of Lights

Celebration for Wheeling families of all religious denominations to kink off this very special time of year.

Focusing on the need to provide community wide, family oriented events of interest to all ages, this first-ever celebration offers residents, area houses of worship, and community service organizations an opportunity to support the community and forge a renewed sense of fellowship and goodwill.

Come join the fun and experience the thrill of the holiday season. Whether you choose to sing along with a holiday chorus, enjoy a steaming hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate and light refreshments, or simply take in the beauty of the holiday lights, don't miss this exciting event as you and your family wrap up the Thanksgiving weekend. Be sure to mark your calendar for what will undoubtedly become an annual village event and tradition for you and your family. If you have any questions, or would like to participate in this spirited event, please contact Trustee Judy AbruscatoatS41-87X3.Let'skick off the holiday season together.

Police Department Safety Program Provides Free Bike Helmets to Needy Kids

The Wheeling Police Department has expanded its Bicycle Safety Program and now provides free bike safety helmets to underprivileged children, between the ages of 5 and 10 years of age, who might otherwise not be able to afford to buy them.

Hundreds of children are killed and thousands injured each year due to bicycle related accidents. Many serious head injuries and deaths could be avoided by wearing bike safety helmets that meet or exceed Federal safety standards. The police department's goal in implementing this program is to increase the usage of helmets among young riders and reduce the risk of serious injury.

Potential recipients of the free helmets will be identified through the "free and assisted lunch programs" at area schools and through the Wheeling Resource Center. Social workers at the schools will contact eligible families.

Recipients of the helmets must attend a bicycle safety seminar conducted by a member of the Wheeling bicycle patrol unit.

The bicycle helmets are purchased from Bell Sports through donations received from community businesses.

Thank you for your dedication to the children of Wheeling and to the Wheeling Police Department.

Getting the Biggest Bang for Your Buck!

4th of July Plans In the Works The planners of Wheeling's 4th of July celebration hope that a one dollar ($1.00) contribution from each household in the community will help to provide the most festive Fourth of July ever!

That's why residents will get the chance to make a $1.00 donation via their water bills. Watch for your November water billing for details.

Several exciting new features are being planned for Wheeling's 1998 4th of July celebration.

Annual Parade New Time *

The annual parade will step off at a new time of 6:00 p.m., which allows the greatest participation possible by local marching bands and other participants. (We are happy to report that as of this writing, the Grayslake High School Band, led by Wheeling High School alumnus Paul Nielsen, has signed on to march in the parade. Mr. Nielsen's own blues band will also provide entertainment during the festivities planned after the parade.) A Taste of Wheeling *

Following the parade, the village's first ever "Taste of Wheeling" is planned and will be an opportunity to enjoy the delicious and diverse food specialties of many of Wheeling's fine dining establishments.

Spectacular Fireworks *

As dusk settles over the community, residents will then be able to view a spectacular fireworks extravaganza. Corus Bank has already signed on as the first co-sponsor of the fireworks, and the Village of Wheeling extends sincere appreciation to them for their donation.

It's not too late, however, for other local businesses to sign up as co-sponsors of the fireworks display. Please contact Village Trustee Judy Abruscato (541 -8783) for further information about co-sponsoring the fireworks or participating in the parade.

Remember, watch for your next water bill to find out how to support the 4th of July activities in your community.
